Powerplay Prowess and a Late Surge: Hobart Hurricanes Outmuscle Sydney Sixers
The Hobart Hurricanes unleashed a powerful display of batting, powered by Mitchell Owen’s explosive start and late fireworks from David, to defeat the Sydney Sixers in a thrilling Big Bash League Qualifier on january 21, 2025, at Hobart.
After a shaky start, the sixers found themselves in a precarious position as they struggled to contain Owen’s onslaught. Owen, in a season marked by power-hitting mastery, lived up to his formidable reputation in the powerplay, smashing 36 runs off just 15 balls. As commentator aptly noted, ”Owen hasn’t translated his Sheffield Shield success to the BBL this season, but he’s certainly making up for it now.”
Owen’s blazing innings set the stage for a strong start for the Hurricanes, though they stuttered slightly after his dismissal. David, the Hurricanes’ explosive batsman, then took center stage, delivering a late surge that propelled his team towards victory.
For the Sixers,Kurtis Patterson, standing in for the absent Smith, played a valiant role in their fightback. He delivered a fluent knock, anchoring the innings with a 75-run partnership with Silk. Despite their best efforts, the Sixers couldn’t quite bridge the gap against the Hurricanes’ potent batting lineup.
Sixers Edge Out Hurricanes in Thrilling BBL Clash

Archyde: In Conversation with Hobart Hurricanes’ Captain, Tim Paine
Welcome to Archyde’s exclusive interview with Hobart Hurricanes’ skipper, Tim Paine, following their thrilling semi-final win against the Sydney Sixers.Tim, thank you for joining us today.
Tim Paine (TP): Thanks for having me. It’s a great feeling to be in the Grand Final, and I’m happy to chat about it.
Archyde (A): Let’s dive right in. Riley Meredith was absolutely outstanding with the ball. what was your take on his performance?
TP: Riley was simply sensational. The way he bowled in the powerplay set the tone for the entire innings. His pace was frightening, and the control he had over his deliveries was exemplary. The bouncer he bowled to Jordan Silk was one of the fastest I’ve ever seen in Australian domestic cricket. It was a standout performance from him.
A: His figures of 3-32 off his four overs were indeed impressive. How did you manage the fightback from the Sixers, notably Patterson and Silk?
TP: Well, we knew Patterson and silk coudl bat. They’re both quality players and have beenMatch-turning players for the Sixers in the past.We had to maintain our composure and keep the pressure on them. The bowlers, led by Chris Jordan, did exceptionally well to keep them in check. The way they executed their plans, especially with-minded owners at the backend, was crucial in securing the victory.
A: Speaking of the bowlers, your attack maintained a tight leash throughout the innings. How did you strategize against the Sixers’ potential breakthrough players?
TP: We knew the Sixers had some big hitters, so we planned to keep them tied down and take wickets at regular intervals. Meredith set the tone early, and then it was about being disciplined and not giving away easy runs. We also wanted to keep them guessing by mixing our pace and line lengths. It was a total team effort out there.
A: Switching gears a bit, in the qualifier against the Sixers, Mitchell Owen played a blistering knock at the top. What did you make of his innings, and how has he evolved as a batsman this season?
TP: Mitch has been a revelation for us this season. He’s always had the talent, but this year, he’s finally translating that into consistent performances in the BBL. The way he played against the Sixers was brilliant. He took advantage of the powerplay and set the stage for our middle order. His evolution as a player is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
A: The Hurricanes will now have a good few days to rest and prepare for the Grand Final. How are you going to keep your team motivated and focused in this elimination break?
TP: We’re definitely going to enjoy this break, but we won’t forget why we’re here. We’ve worked hard all season to reach the Grand Final, and we’re not about to let it slip away. I’ll make sure the boys stay focused and ready to go. We’ll be refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to give it our all in the Grand Final.
A: Tim,thank you for your time and Congratulations on reaching the BBL Grand Final. We wish you and the Hurricanes the very best.
TP: Thank you. We’re looking forward to the challenge ahead, and we can’t wait to give our fans a night to remember on January 27th.
