Hygge (Danish: hygge) is a concept that originated in the Scandinavian countries, denoting a feeling of coziness and comfortable communication with feelings of well-being and satisfaction. In recent years, hygge has become a defining characteristic of Danish culture.

Mike Viking, founder and director of the Danish Institute for Happiness Research, gives in his book “Hygge. The secret of Danish happiness” 8 tips for achieving hygge:

-Make your place of stay cozy – home, office;

-Hosting loved ones at home;

-Eat deliciously, enjoy cooking;

-To live an active lifestyle;

-Dress in comfortable, casual clothing;

-Enjoy simple joys;

– Engage in hobbies, creative activities that bring pleasure;

-Have a sense of proportion while having fun.

A Spanish citizen spoke on Facebook regarding his 4-year experience of living in Denmark.

Obvious advantages:

-The food and clothing are the best quality I have ever seen. All the clothes I bought from local brands and stores were the most wearable and durable. This also applies to food: every time I drank coffee or bought a pastry, everything corresponded to the picture on the window or on the menu, and despite the price, I got exactly what I paid for!

-The most tourist-friendly country. Everything is dubbed in English; if you ask anyone on the street they will always help you, most people speak English. It’s easy to understand the transport system and fares. In 4 years I have never gotten lost.

-Water is everywhere. For a person like me who loves lakes and beaches, living here is a dream. It’s especially great in the summer: wherever I go, there are bodies of water, next to which it’s nice to relax.

Minuses:

-2 years ago I worked in a clothing store. I was often shocked by the harsh reactions of customers. For example, if I made a mistake – I brought the wrong size – the client might instantly become angry. I dealt with this almost every day. Not only in the store, but also in transport, on the street. As soon as the problem was resolved, the person became kind and sweet once more. But this abrupt switch between emotions was unexpectedly shocking.

-Weather: This is actually one of the reasons I’m leaving and will be back in the summer (when hopefully it won’t rain). But seriously, nothing wrecked my psyche like seasonal depression, which eventually turned into annual depression as fall and winter arrived.
