Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, in his Easter address, called on Ukrainians for unity in prayer and called God an “ally” in the war with Russia.
Zelensky called on Ukrainians to unite in prayer for each other and for the soldiers on the front line. In a video filmed in front of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, wearing a traditional embroidered shirt, Zelensky said that God “has a chevron with the Ukrainian flag on his shoulder.” With such an ally, life will definitely conquer death, the Ukrainian president is sure.
“The Bible teaches us to love our neighbor. And the present has shown us the true meaning of this word. When we all became close to each other. And the former neighbor, who constantly became our brothers, is forever distant for us. He broke all the commandments, demanded our house, came to kill us. The world sees this. God knows this. And we believe: God has a chevron with the Ukrainian flag on his shoulder. So with such an ally, life will definitely defeat death,” Zelensky said.
Most Ukrainians consider themselves Orthodox Christians, although the church is divided. Many belong to the independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The rival Ukrainian Orthodox Church was loyal to the patriarch in Moscow until it split from the Russian church following the 2022 invasion, and many Ukrainians view it with suspicion.
