This year, as in the past, the best results were shown by ninth-graders in the centralized exam in English, followed by Latvian, and the worst results, as usual, in the exam in mathematics, writes Latvijas Avīze.
Compared to last year, when ninth-graders took centralised exams for the first time, this year the results in Latvian have improved, but in English and mathematics they have become significantly worse.
At the same time, this year there are fewer ninth-graders who failed any of the exams.
To pass the exam, you need to score at least 10% of the possible points. Last year, 1,059 exam papers did not score these 10%, and most often – in mathematics. This year, it was planned to raise the bar to 15%, but seeing the statistics of those who failed the exam, the government decided to keep the bar at 10%.
This year, 654 students failed the math exam, 155 failed the English exam, and 106 failed the Latvian exam. Last year, the numbers were 826, 143, and 90 students, respectively. Thus, the number of students who failed the math exam decreased, while the number of students who failed the Latvian and English exams increased.
In total, 915 examination papers did not receive even a 10% mark this year.
