Divers examining the wreck of the Bayesian have called for increased surveillance, fearing that sensitive data stored in the superyacht’s safes could be of interest to foreign governments, such as Russia and China. Several sources revealed this to CNN, according to which the Bayesian, which sank on August 19 – causing the death of eight people, including British tycoon Mike Lynch, founder of the cybersecurity company Darktrace and owner of the superyacht – could be carrying highly classified information linked to some Western intelligence services. According to the American broadcaster, which cites an official involved in the recovery plans, the Bayesian, which lies on the seabed at a depth of about 50 meters, is home to watertight safes containing two super-encrypted hard drives with highly classified information, including access codes and other sensitive data.

Initially, local law enforcement feared that thieves might try to reach the wreck to steal expensive jewelry and other valuables, but now there are fears that the wreck could also be of interest to foreign governments, including Russia and China. “A formal request for additional security of the wreck has been accepted and implemented until it can be recovered,” Francesco Venuto of the Sicilian Civil Protection confirmed to CNN.
