The story of the Bayesian, the super-yacht that sank off the coast of Palermo, is starting to take on clearer hues. The Captain of the sailing ship that sank in the waters of Porticello a week ago, James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander, is being investigated by the Termini Imerese prosecutor’s office. He is being charged with shipwreck and multiple manslaughter. The news was reported in the online edition of ‘Repubblica-Palermo’. Until Saturday, the investigation, as explained by prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio in a press conference, was against unknown persons. Seven people lost their lives in the tragedy. Fifteen survived. In the morning, investigators will assign the assignments for the autopsies on the bodies, kept in the Rotoli cemetery and at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Policlinico of Palermo. The interested parties will be summoned to carry out the tests. It is not excluded that in the next few hours the register of suspects may also include the names of other members of the crew.

There are still many points to clarify to understand what happened at dawn on August 19 in front of the Porticello body of water. Many doubts, many questions. Investigators are trying to understand if and what human errors caused the sinking of the luxury vessel. Was the side hatch closest to the water really open? And why was the keel partially raised that evening? All questions to which Catfield, who yesterday was described as a “dejected and depressed” man by those who saw him inside the Hotel Domina Zagarella, which houses all the crew members, should have an answer. During the second interrogation, Commander Cutfield answered about the position of the keel, the open hatch and when the alarm was triggered after the worsening of the weather conditions. The approximately 32 minutes that passed from when the vessel began to take on water to the firing of the rocket at 4.38 am have also been reconstructed, as recalled by the prosecutor of Termini Imerese Ambrogio Cartosio during the press conference on Saturday.
