After a week of testing, Bayern Munich finally gave up on recovering veteran center back Jerome Boateng, the club announced this Friday, criticized because the former German international is immersed in a judicial process for violence towards his former partner.

The 2014 world champion, 35 years old and without a contract since July 1 after being released with Lyon, joined the training sessions led by coach Thomas Tuchel on Sunday, who only has three pure centre-backs; the Frenchman Dayot Upamecano, the Dutch Matthijs De Ligt and the South Korean Kim Min-jae.

Boateng played for Bayern between 2011 and 2021, winning the Champions League twice (2013, 2020) and many other titles.

“Considering all aspects, Bayern has decided to give up signing Jerome Boateng,” the entity said this Friday, offering the player the possibility of “staying fit” at the club.

The player was sentenced in September 2021 to pay 1.8 million euros ($1.9 million) for violence towards his former partner in 2018. His fine was reduced to 1.2 million after filing an appeal.

On Wednesday, the highest court in the Bavarian region agreed to the request for review by the three parties, annulling the conviction after appeal and ordering a new trial for the same facts.
