Bayern had twelve unavailable, including nine following a positive Covid-19 test. Despite this, the ‘Rekordmeister’ got off to a good start, finding the opening in the 18th minute thanks to the inevitable Robert Lewandowski. But Borussia reversed the situation in five minutes via Florian Neuhaus (27th) and Stefan Lainer (31st).
Lewandowski was unlucky when he saw the post (45th + 2) and the cross (62nd) push back two of his attempts.
In an attempt to get back on track, Bavarian coach Julian Nagelsmann brought in Paul Wanner, who turned 16 on 23 December, who became the youngest player in Bayern Munich’s history to enter the Bundesliga. Wanner replaced 19-year-old Malik Tillman in the 75th minute, largely beating the youth record of Jamal Musiala, who started in the ‘Rekordmeister’ jersey at 17 years and 115 days.
Bayern concede a third league defeat this season. With 43 points, the Bavarians remain solid leaders in the Bundesliga. They provisionally keep 9 lengths ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who travel to Frankfurt on Saturday.
Mönchengladbach (22 points) climbs back to eleventh position.
