Bayer Leverkusen entered the semi-finals of the Europa League with a 1-1 draw once morest West Ham United. Never before has another team managed to remain unbeaten in 44 consecutive competitive games.

Bayer Leverkusen once more avoided a late defeat and entered the semi-finals of the Europa League with a record. Four days following winning the German Football Championship for the first time, the club earned a 1-1 (0-1) draw in the quarter-final second leg at West Ham United thanks to wildcard Jeremy Frimpong.

New record series for Bayer

With their 44th consecutive unbeaten game, coach Xabi Alonso’s side have replaced Juventus Torino as the European record holder. The Italians were unbeaten in 43 consecutive matches from May 2011 to May 2012. Leverkusen won the first match 2-0. Substitute Frimpong scored for Leverkusen in the 89th minute following Michail Antonio (13) had given West Ham the lead.

In seven previous matches, Leverkusen had only avoided defeat from the 90th minute onwards. In the semi-finals, coach Xabi Alonso’s team plays once morest AS Roma on 2 and 9 May and has home advantage in the second half.
