The General Elections Supervisory Body of the Republic of Indonesia has asked prospective candidate pairs in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections to refrain from campaigning before the official campaign period is set.
“The regulation has determined that there is a time for regional election participants to campaign,” said member of the Indonesian General Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) Puadi when contacted in Jakarta today, responding to the increasing number of prospective regional election participants who are taking advantage of the car-free day to interact with residents.
According to Puadi, technically there is no prohibition for prospective regional election candidate pairs to utilize car-free days (CFD) to meet with the public.
However, to ensure the same principles among participants who will take part in the five-yearly democratic party, they should refrain from taking advantage of this opportunity.
This is because the 2024 Pilkada campaign period already has a schedule and prospective candidate pairs can use the existing schedule to invite residents who have the right to vote to vote when the voting takes place on November 27.
“To guarantee the principle of equal treatment in contesting regional elections, prospective candidates should be able to restrain themselves from carrying out actions such as campaigning,” he said.

He added that the current rules apply if the prospective candidate pair for the 2024 Pilkada has been determined as a candidate pair by the KPU, all rules will be binding on the election participants.
“This is in accordance with the KPU Regulation which explains that meetings are considered as campaigns if the prospective candidate pair has been determined as a candidate pair by the KPU,” he said.
Currently, the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections have entered the stage of checking the administrative requirements of prospective candidate pairs and after all are declared complete, a plenary meeting will be held to determine the regional head candidates.
The 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections were participated by 545 regions throughout Indonesia consisting of 37 provinces, 415 regencies, and 93 cities. This regional election is a grand party in the five-yearly political contestation in Indonesia. (Ant/P-2)
