The German Weather Service (DWD) is expecting heavy, continuous rain until Thursday night and partly beyond – especially in the Rhön, Franconian Forest, Fichtelgebirge and Bavarian Forest areas. In Bavaria, the risk of flooding will increase once more in the coming days, warn the DWD and the Bavarian Flood Intelligence Service (HND). A significant increase in water levels is expected in the catchment areas of Naab and Regen, the Franconian Saale, the Tauber, the Upper Main and tributaries of the Regnitz. The DWD also cites landslides as a possible danger. Windows and doors should therefore remain closed in the affected regions. The DWD’s severe weather warning is valid until Thursday.
Flooding is possible, especially in the north and east of Bavaria
The Flood Intelligence Service Bavaria (HND) warns of flooding for built-up areas in the districts of Coburg, Kronach, Lichtenfels, Forchheim as well as in the city and district of Bamberg. He warns of overburdens and flooding in the city and district of Aschaffenburg, in the districts of Main-Spessart, Bad Kissingen, Rhön-Grabfeld, Schweinfurt, Haßberge, Schwandorf, in the city and district of Erlangen, Erlangen-Höchstadt, the city and district of Fürth, the city of Nuremberg, Nuremberg region, city of Schwabach and Roth.
Reporting levels 1 or 2 are expected at the warning gauges on the rivers Streu, Brend, Els, Baunach, Main, Sinn and Thulba. According to the Bad Kissingen Water Management Office, reporting level 3 of a total of four reporting levels is also possible on the Franconian Saale. Accordingly, individual developed properties or cellars might be flooded or individual road closures might be necessary. Water levels are expected to remain high until the end of the week, according to the water management office.
Up to 20 centimeters of snow in the Bavarian Forest
It can also snow heavily in eastern Bavaria until Tuesday followingnoon. North of the Danube, there will be one to five centimeters of snow for a short time in the valleys, and even up to 20 centimeters in reservoirs in the Bavarian Forest. In the Rhön and the eastern low mountain ranges, up to 10 centimeters of fresh snow will fall locally above around 600 meters.
Gusts of up to 110 km/h and black ice
It will also be stormy in the Free State: In the west there can be strong to stormy gusts, and in higher altitudes in the Alps and low mountain ranges there can also be squalls. According to the information, severe squalls are possible in mountain peaks and hurricane-like gusts of up to 110 km/h are possible on high Alpine peaks. The new year also starts with slippery and frosty conditions in parts of Bavaria: According to the DWD, it will be slippery today in the eastern low mountain ranges and on the Rhön: caution is advised on the roads.
