In the first survey since the leaflet affair regarding Bavaria’s deputy prime minister Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters) became known, his party has clearly gained ground. In the survey published today by the INSA institute for the “Bild” newspaper, the independent voters recorded an increase of four percentage points and come to 15 percent.

According to the survey, Prime Minister Markus Söder’s CSU is 37 percent, losing one point compared to the INSA survey at the end of July. The Greens also deteriorate by one point to 14 percent. The party is thus on par with the AfD.

The SPD loses two points and comes in the current survey to nine percent. The FDP is at four percent and would thus miss entering the state parliament.

Election on October 8th

A new state parliament will be elected in the German state of Bavaria on October 8th. The election campaign is overshadowed by the Aiwanger leaflet affair. According to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, he was suspected of having written and distributed an anti-Semitic leaflet when he was at school in the 1980s.

The Free Voters boss admitted that copies of the leaflet were found in his satchel, but denied being the author. Söder, whose CSU forms a coalition with the Free Voters in Free State, decided on Sunday to stick with Aiwanger despite nationwide criticism. He also ruled out trying to form a coalition with the Greens following the election.
