A few minutes before they set off, they checked the weather forecast. The forecast was good enough, the planned trip might take place. On Friday followingnoon, 13 children from the Gmunden city kindergarten made their way from the Mühlbachberg car park to the Hochsteinalm near Traunkirchen with their carers and parents. But following just one kilometer on the forest road, the wind picked up considerably and a thunderstorm was approaching. A strong gust suddenly uprooted a 15 meter long and up to 30 centimeters thick tree, which fell directly in the direction of the kindergarten group.
The adults began to scream loudly, most of the children were able to jump to safety. But a six-year-old girl from Altmünster was unlucky: the tree hit her directly on the head. The girl’s father had to watch the accident, but reacted with quick-wittedness: following the emergency services had been alerted, he immediately ran back to the starting point to get his car. Because the scene of the accident was completely unsuitable for transport by helicopter.
In the meantime, the seriously injured girl has been given first aid by a companion who, fortunately, is also an emergency paramedic. The girl was taken a kilometer further up the mountain in her father’s car, where the emergency doctor helicopter “Martin 3” was able to land despite heavy rain. Together with the Gmunden rescue service, the crew began to stabilize the six-year-old.
The girl was flown to the Linz MedCampus4 for further care, the kindergarten group was looked following by the crisis intervention team. According to the OÖN request from MedCampus4, there is no danger to life.
