Batopin, the joint venture set up by the banks ING, BNP, Belfius and KBC, plans to accelerate the deployment of its “neutral” ATMs in the kingdom. The joint venture intends to open a new withdrawal point per working day over the next two years, announced the group’s CEO, Jeroen Ghysel, in an interview with Trends magazine.

“The main difficulty is finding a suitable location for the vending machines,” admits the CEO. “We have already selected 125 additional locations, but it takes an average of six to seven months to obtain all the authorizations, carry out the development and security work and commission the distributor,” he adds. In order to speed up the procedure, Batopin (for Belgian ATM OPtimization INitiative) intends to send more people to the field and to work more closely with the local authorities.

The group’s objective is to install around 2,500 ATMs spread over 950 locations by the end of 2025. A development which, according to Mr Ghysel, should meet the cash need of Belgians. According to a recent study by the European Central Bank (ECB), Belgians are the most unhappy in Europe with the lack of availability of cash.
