We knew Bastian Baker hockey player, then singer, dancer and circus artist. Here he is now as a voice actor in the cinema. The 31-year-old Vaudois has been selected to lend his voice to Jean Clawed, a villain in the film “Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru”. If he had never imagined himself in this position, he admits to having “adored this experience”.

The film is in cinemas from this Wednesday, July 6 in the dark rooms of French-speaking Switzerland. The Swiss artist tells us regarding this “improbable” adventure.

How were you contacted to dub the voice of Jean Clawed in “The Minions 2”?

It was quite simple. I got an email asking if I wanted to voice Jean Clawed in “Minions 2” and I said yes. (Laughs.)

Did you immediately accept?

I did not hesitate. It’s one of my favorite movies and I really wanted to be part of the adventure. I was super excited when I received the offer. It was April 2021, during a phase where, honestly, I didn’t have too much to do. I managed to fit it into the schedule easily. And zero regrets. It was an amazing experience from start to finish.

You had never thought of this kind of experience before?

It had never crossed my mind. I really discovered this job thanks to this opportunity. Now I pay much more attention to detail. When you watch a dubbed movie, you say to yourself: “Well, it’s been dubbed.” You don’t think regarding the work behind it or the guys who did this and got into the role, who chose a particular voice to bring the characters to life in a language.

What was complicated?

To have confidence. I arrived in a new world and I dreaded it because I didn’t want things to go wrong. I didn’t want people to say to me following three sentences: “Okay, we’re going to find someone else.” In the end, it went very well. Fortunately, I make music and I know a lot of voice. For breathing, timing and intonation issues it helped a lot. It’s really not an easy job.

Did you sympathize a little with Gad Elmaleh who plays the role of Gru?

Yeah, I had the chance to spend a lot of time with him, especially during the preview in France. And it’s true that that’s also part of the charm of this adventure. These are several personalities who have all gathered around the “Minions” project which is… Frankly, the film is incredible, it’s too funny. And Gad is doing a truly remarkable job. It was cool to be able to chat a little bit with him. I also realized that he was really an inspiration to me. I think he’s been my favorite comedian for a very long time. Meeting him for the first time, it did something to me. I went backstage, we were both there. We were able to chat for a little while and, followingwards, you say to yourself: “Ah anyway, the guy. It’s Gad, what! The guy is super nice… A size! I felt privileged.

Are you interested in cinema or television for the future?

I have always functioned according to the opportunities and then the chances that come my way. If I have to answer in relation to the investment, I’m not running the castings to become Jean-Claude Van Damme’s official understudy in all the films he’s going to release – it’s the voice of Jean- Claude Van Damme whom I double in this film. But it’s something I like. It’s really fun and it’s true that I would do it once more. We’ll see what the future holds for me.

If you might star in any movie, which would you choose?

I like funny or action movies. “The Minions” is the top of the list for me because it combines the two. I like “Top Gun”, “Mission Impossible”, James Bond… It’s the kind of production that makes me dig. I want to play the role of the bartender in the next “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

You celebrated your ten-year career in 2022 with a tour that took place at the start of the year. What memories do you have of it?

We were lucky enough to do this tour. It was in March. I remember that in the first room where we played, we were the first to set foot there since the recovery. There was a lot of symbolism because we wanted to show that it was possible to do a concert without it creating a problem. We wanted to smash everything, we never left the stage. The goal was to play songs from all five albums. It was nice to see people once more. I missed the adrenaline and emotion of the scene. We were celebrating ten years, but we were also celebrating a return. And it’s been the same with Cirque Knie since the beginning of the year…

Exactly, you have signed for a second season with Cirque Knie. Do you like the marquee life?

I like. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here for a second year. It’s an amazing experience. The pacing is absolutely insane. Everything is great, the quality of the show, the people involved. In addition, the public is really present every time. It’s so encouraging. It energizes a team. We will come to French-speaking Switzerland at the end of August and for two months we will travel through Geneva, Nyon, Lausanne, Vevey, Sion… I am delighted to return with the circus.

We finish mid-January with the circus, so following that I’m still going to give myself a few weeks of vacation. It’s been a completely crazy year and I don’t think it will happen once more to play so many shows in such a short time. I know I’m going to have to take a little time for myself. But I continue to write and record songs. I’m releasing the clip for the next single soon. A rather funny clip. I just want to have fun and share this.
