Bassil is sending Aoun to the Shiite duo to delay the upcoming local elections and prolong the current municipalities.

According to information from “Al-Jadeed”, Gebran Bassil, the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, has dispatched Representative Alain Aoun to hold communication sessions with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Hezbollah. The purpose is to explore the possibility of holding a legislative session to postpone local elections and extend the current municipalities as per a law issued by the House of Representatives. The postponement is related to Najib Mikati, the caretaker prime minister’s announcement regarding the inability to finance the elections from the Special Drawing Fund (SDR). The movement will participate in a parliamentary session for the postponement, but only following announcing the inability to finance. Sources confirmed that the matter is supposed to be resolved next week. Meanwhile, Mikati’s sources mentioned that the government and Interior Minister Bassam al-Mawlawi will continue to insist on holding elections until the last moment.
