Thomas Jurkovitz and his teammates started the play-offs in the best possible way.

In their best-of-five play-off quarter-final, the Geneva Lions lead 1-0 in the Lake Geneva derby once morest BBC Nyon (83-59). Match No 2 will take place on Tuesday evening, still at Le Pommier.

The first act got off to a flying start at the address. Infernal from behind the arc with three winning shots during the first quarter, Thomas Jurkovitz ideally launched the Lions but the top scorer from Nyon, Colin Dougherty, answered him and confirmed his resplendent form at the end of the regular season (20 -20).

If they had known how to make a few defensive stops, the Côte formation should have come off the scoreboard in the middle of the second quarter when Joël Wolfisberg, Colin Dougherty and Maleye N’Doye in turn found the target at long distance. But Thomas Jurkovitz (17 points) kept the Lions in the game almost all by himself: defensively, once morest Jeff Dufour, but also in attack, by scoring at the low post, in offensive transition, or by subtly shifting Slobodan Miljanic. At halftime, the break was Geneva (42-33).

BBC Nyon’s affairs did not improve following the break. Stefan Ivanovic’s proteges chained stupid ball losses and if we had to bring out an action to symbolize a group that remained in the locker room, it would be this missed shot by Jérémy Jaunin, alone in the direction of the basket. Seeing his team unable to stop the Geneva attack, Ivanovic drew another defensive option, with a zone. But Miljanic, still behind the winning line, “killed” the last hopes of Nyon.

The union surprise

The little surprise at the start of the play-off came from the Galeries du Rivage, where Vevey Riviera Basket (4th) lost in the last moments once morest Union (5th), 71-75. Engaged in a lagging match, the Veveysans equalized at the start of the last minute, on a shot from Thabo Sefolosha (24 points and 13 rebounds). But Neuchâtel full-back Juan Esteban de la Fuente gave the visitors victory with a shot from 8 meters from elsewhere.

At home, the two heavyweights did not shake. Spinelli Massagno exploded a decimated BC Boncourt (111-61) while its runner-up during the regular season, Friborg Olympic, outclassed BBC Monthey (91-67).
