Basketball is a Family Affair: The Nahar Family’s Journey in Basketball and Beyond

It took a bit of persuasion to convince Mike Nahar to take part in the HZ district league betting game. The Heidensheimer SB basketball coach is a real sports all-rounder. At the city run, the 2.10 meter tall Nahar might not be overlooked in the starting field. The Dutchman can also be found on the training area at the HSB sports studio and has valuable tips to offer. And he has now given it away for the sixth matchday in the district league.

He prefers to talk regarding his first passion: basketball, which plays a big role in his family. “Everyone wants to go to the NBA,” says Mike Nahar, referring to his son Leon and his daughter Maya. At that time, Nahar himself was unable to step into the best basketball league in the world. The former Netherlands international was not selected by an NBA team following his scholarship at Wright State University. Instead, he had a remarkable career in European professional basketball. In addition to his duties at HSB, Nahar, as a proud father, supports the young basketball careers of his children Leon and Maya.

Basketball is a family affair for the Nahars

However, he has had to do this largely from a distance for some time, because both son Leon and daughter Maya Nahar followed in their father’s footsteps and moved to the USA at a young age to pursue their hobby of playing basketball. “Leon has been in the USA for three years now,” explains Mike Nahar. “He first graduated from high school in North Carolina and then started a basketball scholarship in Long Island New York,” Nahar continues.

Knows how to use his size well: Leon Nahar Mike Nahar

According to Mike Nahar, son Leon, who is only two centimeters shorter than his father at an impressive height of 2.08 meters, is characterized above all by his good understanding of the game. He also adds: “Leon loves training, he likes being in the hall and also in the weight room.”

Son and daughter dream of professional careers

“It would of course be a dream if he made it to the NBA, but a lot of people want that and there are plenty of other opportunities for him,” says father Nahar. 20-year-old Leon Nahar is studying sports psychology and in addition to sporting achievements, “school performance is also very important,” emphasizes Mike Nahar, who attaches great importance to his children having fun and being happy. Leon’s sister Maya Nahar also moved to the United States two years ago. “After Leon left, Maya said following just a few months that she wanted to go to the USA too,” explains Mike Nahar with a smile. Maya Nahar, now 17, was only 15 at the time, while her brother Leon had only left home when he was 17. “Maya decided once morest offers from high-class German clubs and really wanted to go to the USA,” says Mike Nahar.

The then 15-year-old eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio. “Maya really cleans up there. She is now 1.90 meters tall, has good technique and is very athletic,” says the visibly proud Mike Nahar. “She has over 25 scholarship offers. Harvard University is also among those interested. However, it is not yet clear where they will go next,” he explains.

Football on the streets and in college

Almost everything revolves around basketball in the Nahar house. In addition to shooting baskets, kicking was also an issue for the former center – at least in the past.

“I don’t follow football that actively,” says Nahar. However, in his youth he was on the streets himself. where he played a lot of football. Even though basketball was of course always his first sport, football also had a place in the tall Dutchman’s childhood. “When I was in the USA, we occasionally played football with the boys from the college team. They were surprised that I was the only basketball player who might play some soccer,” Nahar recalls with amusement.

Today, the 52-year-old regularly integrates football into the warm-up program of his youth basketball teams. However, they still have to dribble with a basketball at the same time. “This promotes coordination,” explains Coach Nahar.

Mike Nahar’s tips for the sixth matchday of the district football league

SG Heldenfingen/Heuchlingen – SV Lauchheim (tip: 1-0, Sunday 3 p.m.)

“I looked at the table. Neither of them have scored that many goals yet. Heldenfingen narrowly wins 1-0,” says Mike Nahar.

TV Neuler – TSG Nattheim (tip: 1:2, Sunday 3 p.m.)

“Nattheim is at the forefront. I also often go to Nattheim on one of my bike tours,” explains the HSB trainer.

TV Steinheim – 1.FC Stern Mögglingen (tip: 1-0, Sunday 3 p.m.)

“Steinheim hasn’t won a game yet, but maybe they can get the first three points at home once morest Mögglingen.” He also adds: “Steinheim isn’t far away either, I go hiking there every now and then.”

FV Sontheim/Brenz – SF Dorfmerkingen II (tip: 1:1, Sunday 3 p.m.)

“This game will end in a draw,” speculates Nahar, some of whose youth players come from Sontheim. That’s why he had to quickly learn the difference between Sontheim/Brenz and Sontheim/Stubental. “It’s easy to get lost,” he says and laughs.

TSG Schnaitheim – TSG Hofherrnweiler-Unterrombach II (tip: 2:1, Sunday 3 p.m.)

“Schnaitheim didn’t get off to a good start. I live in Heidenheim – close to the border with Schnaitheim. That’s why I often go to Schnaitheim and use the routes in the forest to walk the dog or jog myself. I often go to Moldenberg in particular. So I hope my home team wins.”

This is how Katja Abele predicted the fifth matchday

Of her five tips on matchday five, Katja Abele was only correct in one game. The TSG Schnaitheim runner predicted the victory of FV Sontheim in Mögglingen.
