Basketball: BBU Salzburg misses a chance in the fight for the top spot

BBU Salzburg lost at home to the Mistelbach Mustangs on Saturday. The second division basketball team lost 83:92 to the top team from the East, despite 36 points from Adrian Mitchell. The fight for the top position before the playoffs remains open.

With a win, BBU Salzburg might have secured first place in the West Conference. And in the third quarter on Saturday, the Falcons were well on their way to a home win in the Alpenstraße sports hall. But Mistelbach fought back with an excellent final section.

BBU Salzburg turns up the heat

Previously, Salzburg had started weakly. The Alex Reed trio Zdenek Nehyba, Jan Kozina and Maximilian Girschik scored at will. The Mustangs were clearly leading, but Mitchell and company came back before the break. It was 47:47 following two quarters. After that, Salzburg upped the ante. Drew Koka and captain Luka Milovac always prevailed. 68:57 was the score before the final section.

Mistelbach turns up

But suddenly Mistelbach turned the tables. Christoph Leydolf in particular made it difficult for the Falcons with good defense and a high hit rate from distance. Salzburg lacked the last punch and allowed 35 points in the final ten minutes. “A painful defeat. We showed two different faces today. We were good in the second and third quarters, but the start and end were fatal. Congratulations to Mistelbach, who we hope to see once more in the playoffs,” says BBU assistant coach Dimitris Mouratoglou.
