ISELIN, NJ, Nov. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A team of scientists from BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) and Heesung Catalysts Corporation (HCC) was recently awarded the 2024 Edison Patent Award from the Research and Development of New Jersey for its innovative Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology for fuel-cutting NOx control in gasoline vehicles. The technology treats NOx well under modern engine operating conditions and provides lower tailpipe emissions compared to conventional three-way conversion catalysts.
The team consisted of scientists Xiaolai Zheng and Pat Burk (retired) from ECMS, along with scientists Jinwoo Song and Jun Lee from HCC.
“By integrating a NOx trap functionality into a TWC catalyst, the new TWC-NT technology substantially reduces tailpipe emissions of NOx and other toxic species,” said Xiaolai Zheng, principal scientist at New Automotive Catalyst Technologies at ECMS.
“As a benefit, automakers can calibrate gasoline-powered passenger vehicles with more frequent fuel cuts for better fuel economy, which also means lower CO2 emissions during vehicle operation,” said Jinwoo Song, Vice President and Head of RD&A, HCC.
“This technology has been well received by our customers as it meets an essential market need,” said Saeed Alerasool, Senior Vice President of Research, Development and Applications at ECMS. “We are fortunate to have the best technical minds in the industry working to help our customers meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and achieve high fuel efficiency. This award is a testament to their hard work and daily dedication to innovation. We are very proud of them.”
The New Jersey Research and Development Council created the awards to honor the legacy of Thomas Edison and use his name to honor New Jersey inventors and research organizations that drive innovation and continue to position New Jersey as a global hub for innovation. This award is part of the Council’s mission to collaborate with industry, academia and government to expand and strengthen STEM in education, innovation and the economy.

What challenges did Xiaolai Zheng and Jinwoo Song face during the development of the NOx Trap technology, and how were they overcome?
**Interview with Xiaolai Zheng and Jinwoo Song on the 2024 Edison Patent Award for NOx Trap Technology**
**Interviewer:** Welcome, Xiaolai and Jinwoo! Congratulations on receiving the esteemed 2024 Edison Patent Award. This recognition is a great achievement. Can you tell us more about the innovative Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology that earned you this honor?
**Xiaolai Zheng (ECMS):** Thank you! This technology integrates a NOx trap functionality into a traditional three-way catalyst (TWC). The main goal was to significantly reduce NOx emissions and other toxic compounds from gasoline vehicles, particularly under modern engine operating conditions. This allows us to address stricter emissions regulations while providing drivers with cleaner air.
**Jinwoo Song (HCC):** Yes, and one of the key benefits is that automakers can adjust their vehicles for more frequent fuel cuts, which leads to improved fuel economy and resulted in lower CO2 emissions. This alignment with both environmental standards and performance expectations really highlights the potential impact of our innovation.
**Interviewer:** It sounds like this technology could have a significant positive impact on the automotive industry. How have your customers responded to it so far?
**Saeed Alerasool (not present but quoted):** Our clients have received the technology very well, as it meets an essential market need for cleaner emissions. Our team, including both Xiaolai and Jinwoo, has put in tremendous effort to develop solutions that help our customers navigate the increasingly stringent emissions regulations and improve fuel efficiency.
**Interviewer:** How does this teamwork between BASF and Heesung bolster innovation in the field of environmental catalysis?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** The collaboration between our companies combines our respective strengths in catalysis and materials technology. By working together, we can leverage a broader expertise and aim for more impactful innovations faster than if we were working in silos.
**Jinwoo Song:** I agree. This partnership embodies a shared vision of promoting environmental sustainability and securing a carbon-neutral future. Our combined efforts ensure we stay at the forefront of green technology development.
**Interviewer:** Looking ahead, what are the implications of your work for future automotive technologies?
