ISELIN, NJ, Nov. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A team of scientists from BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) and Heesung Catalysts Corporation (HCC) was recently awarded the 2024 Edison Patent Award from the Research and Development of New Jersey for its innovative Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology for fuel-cutting NOx control in gasoline vehicles. The technology treats NOx well under modern engine operating conditions and provides lower tailpipe emissions compared to conventional three-way conversion catalysts.
The team consisted of scientists Xiaolai Zheng and Pat Burk (retired) from ECMS, along with scientists Jinwoo Song and Jun Lee from HCC.
“By integrating a NOx trap functionality into a TWC catalyst, the new TWC-NT technology substantially reduces tailpipe emissions of NOx and other toxic species,” said Xiaolai Zheng, principal scientist at New Automotive Catalyst Technologies at ECMS.
“As a benefit, automakers can calibrate gasoline-powered passenger vehicles with more frequent fuel cuts for better fuel economy, which also means lower CO2 emissions during vehicle operation,” said Jinwoo Song, Vice President and Head of RD&A, HCC.
“This technology has been well received by our customers as it meets an essential market need,” said Saeed Alerasool, Senior Vice President of Research, Development and Applications at ECMS. “We are fortunate to have the best technical minds in the industry working to help our customers meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and achieve high fuel efficiency. This award is a testament to their hard work and daily dedication to innovation. We are very proud of them.”
The New Jersey Research and Development Council created the awards to honor the legacy of Thomas Edison and use his name to honor New Jersey inventors and research organizations that drive innovation and continue to position New Jersey as a global hub for innovation. This award is part of the Council’s mission to collaborate with industry, academia and government to expand and strengthen STEM in education, innovation and the economy.

**What are the key advantages of the Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide Trap technology compared to traditional systems?**
### Interview with Xiaolai Zheng, Principal Scientist at BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Xiaolai. Congratulations on winning the 2024 Edison Patent Award for your innovative Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap technology. Can you explain what this technology entails and its significance in reducing emissions?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Thank you for having me! The Three-Way Conversion Nitrogen Oxide Trap technology we developed is designed to optimize the way gasoline vehicles manage nitrogen oxide emissions. Traditional systems can struggle under modern engine conditions, but our NOx trap technology integrates seamlessly into a traditional Three-Way Catalyst (TWC) system. This integration allows for effective NOx management and leads to much lower tailpipe emissions, addressing the growing concerns about air quality and environmental impact.
**Interviewer:** That’s impressive. How does this technology benefit automakers and consumers alike?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** One of the significant advantages of our TWC-NT technology is how it allows automakers to calibrate vehicles for more frequent fuel cuts during operation. This not only conserves fuel but also substantially reduces CO2 emissions, contributing to overall fuel economy. For consumers, it means they get to drive more eco-friendly vehicles without compromising on performance.
**Interviewer:** It sounds like a win-win situation. Can you share your thoughts on the recognition this award brings to your team and the larger commitment of BASF and HCC to sustainability?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Absolutely. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, which includes brilliant minds from both BASF and HCC. It underscores our collective commitment to innovation and sustainability. As we tackle increasingly stringent emissions regulations, recognition like this not only motivates us but also reinforces our role in leading the charge towards a greener future.
**Interviewer:** As global efforts shift towards a carbon-neutral economy, what role do you see your technology playing in this transition?
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Our technology is a crucial part of the transition to a carbon-neutral economy. By improving the efficiency of gasoline vehicles and reducing harmful emissions, we are directly contributing to cleaner air and lower greenhouse gas emissions. We believe that advancements like this will facilitate the broader adoption of cleaner technologies and accelerate the transition across various sectors.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Xiaolai. It’s clear that your work is making a significant impact, not just for the automotive industry but for the environment as a whole.
**Xiaolai Zheng:** Thank you for having me. I’m excited about the future and look forward to continuing our efforts to create innovative solutions for a sustainable world.
