Bart De Wever’s Declaration: No Coalition with Vlaams Belang – Chinese Espionage Scandal

The president of the N-VA Bart De Wever will “guarantee” that he will not join a Flemish government with Vlaams Belang if the presidents of the CD&V and the Open VLD “commit not to participate in a majority in the federal with a minority Flanders”, he declared Friday evening on the program De Afspraak. Regarding Chinese espionage, he considers the subject serious, but “not new”.

The boss of the Flemish nationalists was notably questioned regarding the Chinese spy scandal involving Vlaams Belang member Frank Creyelman, paid by Beijing to influence Belgian politics.

In the wake of the revelations, several questioning actions by Filip Dewinter, leader of the far-right party, also came to the surface. In addition to contacts with a Chinese spy for the delivery of mouth masks, he made several visits to the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and the Greek neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn, each time accompanied by Frank Creyelman.

According to Mr. De Wever, these actions were known, which does not encourage him to consider an alliance with Belang following the elections of June 2024. “What interest would I have in upsetting a level of power that is going well by getting closer of a party with which I have nothing to do?”, retorted the president of the N-VA.

Guaranteeing that he will not go with Vlaams Belang, Bart De Wever will do so “if Mr. Ongena and Mahdi (respective presidents of the Open VLD and the CD&V, editor’s note) assure that they will not go to a federal majority where Flanders would be in the minority.
