Bart De Wever wants to regionalize competence over nuclear energy

The president of the N-VA, Bart De Wever, proposes to regionalize the competence relating to nuclear energy, currently in federal hands. Flanders might then decide itself to postpone its exit from nuclear power, argued the president of the Flemish nationalists in the program De Ochtend on Radio 1.

The N-VA has already clearly stated its opposition to the closure of Belgian nuclear power plants in 2025. It even hopes for the extension of the two Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors. The party is now throwing a new card on the table by proposing to transfer the competence in matters of nuclear energy from the federal government to the Regions.

According to Mr De Wever, Flanders would be “overwhelmingly” in favor of maintaining nuclear power plants and regionalization would allow the north of the country to decide the fate of Doel 4.

“There is no support for a nuclear exit in Flanders,” he said on Radio 1, adding that only Flemish environmentalists still defended the measure. “We can certainly reach an agreement between party presidents, Groen being only a small formation”, he argued. In Wallonia, the situation is more complex given that Ecolo weighs more heavily in the balance, according to the curator.

In opposition to the federal government, the president of the N-VA estimated on Saturday that the government of Alexander De Croo might not agree on the nuclear file.
