The transfer will also take place at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management on Tuesday followingnoon, following which outgoing minister Mark Harbers will leave politics.
Madlener, who was a member of the House of Representatives for many years and previously also a member of the European Parliament for the PVV, comes from the Rotterdam region. Between 2002 and 2007 he was a councillor for the local party Leefbaar Rotterdam. He also worked as a real estate agent for 14 years.
Pro-aviation
Madlener is known as pro-aviation, as he recently showed during the hearing in which the House of Representatives was introduced to the new ministers. He said he was “proud of Schiphol and KLM” and not in favor of shrinkage.
What concrete policy this will lead to will become clear in the coming months. The main points agreement was rather vague regarding what the new cabinet wants to do with aviation (except for an increase in the flight tax in 2027), because the parties might not agree on it.
It is now up to the ministers to further develop that outline agreement into policy in consultation with the coalition parties. For Madlener, the biggest challenge will be to get NSC on board. That party is known to be very critical of aviation.
