Barracas Recycling Center Fire: Emergency response, impact and aftermath

A recycling center located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Barracas it burned this Saturday late followingnoon. The column of dense smoke black rose and covered a sector of the south of the City of Buenos Aires, while the flames spread due to the strong gusts of wind that affect the area.

It all started around 8 p.m. City Firefighters received an emergency call to deal with the fire on a property located in Herrera at 2,200, a few meters from Riachuelo. They came seven fire crews, since the flames spread widely. Six SAME units were also working.

A critical factor was the wind that began to blow this Saturday night from the south. According to the alert issued by the Meteorological Service, it might go from 35 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts of more than 70 kilometers per hour.

Due to this factor and the heat wave that has been affecting the City for days, the shebang of the place was giving way. Preventively, streets were blocked and a 200-meter security perimeter was deployed.

The fire started at 8 p.m. and due to the gusts of wind it spread quickly and there is a danger of the shed collapsing.

The residents of the area were evacuated.

“It’s a magnitude fire. We have triage units and ambulances, but we are in an absolutely preventive phase“said Alberto Crescenti, director of SAME. “There are papers, many elements that make fire. “We are waiting for firefighters to control the flames, nothing more,” he added.

Although there were no people on the property at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported, Crescenti pointed out that six residents of the recycling center – affected by smoke inhalation – needed to receive oxygen supply. “But we are not going to have to move them, they are not involved due to proximity,” he clarified in dialogue with TN.

In that same signal, Diego Coria, Fire Chief, specified that in the place, in addition to papers, there were also plastic materials and cardboard, and that “part of the shed suffered a collapse and was resting on the structure.” In any case, he clarified that the fire, in the last hours of this Saturday, It was already “controlled”.

The Barracas Green Center is located on site, which covers an area of ​​2,460 square meters. It was inaugurated in 2012, it was presented as an innovative measure in South America.

The objective is for cardboard cooperatives to be able to make a selection of recyclable waste indoors and in a space “suitable in terms of hygiene and safety conditions.” It was the first center of its kind in the City.

As a result of the fire, a dense column of black smoke It might be seen from different neighborhoods such as Constitución and Puerto Madero. In addition, there is a burning smell in sectors of southern Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires.

The flames were recorded on social networks by a user who recorded the fire from his car, while passing through the area behind the recycling center, on the Frondizi highway.

Traffic personnel and the 4D Neighborhood Police Station of the City Police also participate in the operation. The ascent from Río Cuarto Street to the Frondizi Highway, in the Province direction, was cut off. Traffic was also interrupted on Osvaldo Cruz and Herrera avenues.
