Barcelona announced this Wednesday the signing of Iñigo Martínez for the next two seasons, a defender who arrives free following the end of his contract with Athletic Club.
“The footballer will sign for two seasons, until June 30, 2025, and will have a termination clause of 400 million euros (435 million dollars),” Barça said in a statement.
The arrival of the Basque central defender had already been anticipated by the Spanish media for a few weeks, following Martínez decided not to renew with the ‘Leones’ of San Mamés.
Trained in the Real Sociedad academy, the defender made his debut with the San Sebastian team in the elite of LaLiga, before signing for Athletic in 2017.
Martínez, 32, arrives at Barcelona to reinforce the first line, following the departures of Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba.
The Spanish international is the second major addition for Xavi in this transfer window, following the signing of German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who had also finished his contract with Manchester City.
Íñigo Martínez will have a salary of around nine million euros gross per campaign, an amount similar to what he received at Athletic. In addition, his termination clause will be 400 million euros. It is a contract similar to the one signed by Gundogan.
