Barcelona dropped points on Sunday evening when they visited Athletic Bilbao. Xavi’s team did not score, nor did the Basques. What made the evening extra sad for Barcelona is that Frenkie de Jong and Pedri dropped out with what appeared to be serious injuries.

De Jong started in the starting line-up at Barcelona, but he was unable to participate for a long time. After a quarter of the match, the Dutchman suffered an ankle injury during an aerial duel. He tried to limp off the field following injury treatment, but even that turned out to be impossible. He was eventually driven off the field by a cart. That is not only a downer for Xavi, but perhaps also for the Dutch national team, which will play later this month.

Furthermore, it was not a very spectacular first half. Both teams created virtually nothing, except for that one moment from Barcelona. Earlier in the evening, Atlético Madrid also came into action. With Memphis in the starting line-up, Atlético won 2-1 once morest Real Betis. The Dutch attacker played an important role in the opening goal. He pulled the ball tight in front of the goal, which eventually led to an own goal by Rui Silva. Then his fellow striker Álvaro Morata missed a penalty, which he also made up for before half time by nodding in the 2-0 from a rebound.
A wonderful long shot from William Carvalho brought Betis back into the match, but Atlético took the win. That might not be said of Girona, which lost points for the fourth time in the last five games without Daley Blind. It lost 1-0 to Real Mallorca due to a goal by José Copete. As a result, Girona might not benefit from leader Real Madrid’s loss of points and Barcelona and Atlético caught up with Madrid.
