Star singer and actress Barbra Streisand is releasing her long-awaited memoir. The 992-page book “My Name is Barbra” goes on sale in the US on Tuesday. The 81-year-old – one of the most successful musicians in history and a two-time Oscar winner – looks back on her eventful career, criticizes the treatment of women in her industry and gives insights into her love life.
“Sometimes I felt like there was more press regarding my nose than regarding me,” Streisand writes, according to a preprint in People magazine. “I’d like to be able to say that none of this affected me, but it has. Even following all these years, I’m still hurt by the insults and can’t really believe the praise.”
Whoever becomes famous apparently becomes “public property,” writes the singer of hits like “Woman in Love,” “People” and “The Way We Were.” “You become an object to be examined, photographed, analyzed, dissected… and every other time I don’t recognize the person they are portraying. I’ve never gotten used to it, and I try to avoid it, something regarding myself to read.”
In “My Name is Barbra,” Streisand also writes regarding her first marriage to actor Elliott Gould and her affairs with Hollywood legend Marlon Brando and former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. “Deep down, I wanted romance too, but I allowed my work to take up all the space. I used work as a substitute for relationships.”
Streisand writes regarding her 25-year marriage to James Brolin that she met the actor when she had actually given up trying to find someone. “And honestly, I was okay with being solo.” She concludes: “Maybe you have to be happy with yourself before you can be happy with someone else.”
Streisand has sold tens of millions of albums over the course of her decades-long career. She also appeared in numerous films including Funny Girl, A Star is Born, Lord of the Tides and Yentl. Streisand belongs to the select circle of artists who were successful at the Emmy television award, the Grammy music award, the Oscars and the Tony musical and theater award and thus belongs to the so-called EGOT group.
