Barbie is stirring the spirits of many fans, but seems to be upsetting some figures as well. In this case, the film starring Margot Robbie in the lead role was banned in Vietnam this Monday (3) for a reason that seems to have little to do with the doll and its representations.

The veto, in fact, is due to the display, during the film, of a map that assigns a certain maritime zone, the so-called “nine-point line”, to China. However, the territory is disputed by the socialist nations. The film would arrive in the country on July 21, a day after arriving in Brazil, on Thursday (20).

The news was released by the state press. “The National Council for Film Evaluation and Classification watched the film and took the decision to ban its screening in Vietnam due to the violation of the ‘nine point line,'” Vi Kien Thanh, director of the Vietnam Film Department, told the portal of news Dan Tri.

Vietnam has already banned other Hollywood blockbusters recently, such as “Uncharted: Off the Map”, which also showed the same controversial zone in a way that favors China, last year; or “Crazy Rich Asians,” a 2018 comedy that at one point depicts a designer bag with a map attributing disputed islands in the South China Sea to Beijing.

The South China Sea, an area with abundant oil and gas reserves, is the subject of territorial conflicts between various nations in the region.
