Barbie! “Junge Seite” author Hanna Schwaiger went to the cinema – and found out: Even in the pink world, not everything is safe. And that’s good.
The new Barbie film, which has been in cinemas for a month, is now known to everyone thanks to unlimited marketing. Whether young or old, the audience for the new film is already huge. I too was persuaded to go to the cinema and see the film on social media, through collaborations with different brands or through the stars who act in the film. Finally, numerous famous singers such as Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Ice Spice have also written songs for the production.
The spectators of the completely sold-out performance were dressed almost exclusively in pink. Dress code: Barbie. Admittedly, it wasn’t easy to estimate what to expect following entering the cinema hall.
Should the film only be regarding dolls? Is it – once once more – regarding a perfect world that is far away from the reality in which we live? Does the flick serve up all the clichés and stereotypes we know regarding the perfect Barbie doll? But Barbie is also a bit of a childhood, so it’s a must-see, isn’t it?
I was skeptical at first, but this film is so much more than one regarding toys and body ideals. The film is regarding a rather pink “Barbie world” which, by the way, caused an international shortage of the color pink and in which all Barbies ever produced live. They are all extremely successful and permanently happy. Until the so-stereotypical Barbie is suddenly plagued by negative thoughts and several things go wrong, such as her feet becoming “flat”. She has to go into the real world to find the cause of her sudden problems. There she encounters a world that might not be more different than her homeland.
But what makes the film so special now? What is unique regarding the film is that it deals with the disadvantages and problems faced by many women in the real world. It is shown with a lot of humor how Ken has to experience the same disadvantages in the Barbie world as Barbie in the real world. An emotional speech from a new friend of Barbie’s (played by America Ferrera), who is a real-world single mom, went viral on social media. An excerpt from it that sums up the message of the film well:
“It’s literally impossible to be a woman. You’re so beautiful and so smart, and it’s killing me that you think you’re not good enough. We always have to be exceptional, but somehow we always get it wrong. Man You have to be skinny but not too skinny And you must never say you want to be skinny You have to say you want to be healthy but you also have to be skinny You have to be a boss but you can’t be mean. “You have to be able to lead, but you can’t suppress the ideas of others. You have to love being a mother, but you can’t talk regarding your children all the time. You have to be a career woman, but also always take care of other people.”
This film combines humor and feminism with a large portion of one’s own childhood. And he shows in an entertaining way the prejudices that still exist in our society. Portrayed by many of Hollywood’s most famous actors and actresses and accompanied by unique songs, this cinematic pink masterpiece is for those who may not be huge Barbie fans. After all, Barbie actress Margot Robbie herself didn’t really play with Barbie dolls in the past.
Hanna Schwaiger is 15 years old, comes from Seekirchen am Wallersee and attends the Christian-Doppler-Gymnasium in Salzburg.
