‘Barbie and Ken’: the murderous couple who raped minors – More Regions – International

During the 1990s, the police were looking for those responsible for the rapes and murders of girls. Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka never even thought of being suspected of their crimesWell, they were a couple of young people from the “common” who are now recognized as ‘Killer Barbie and Ken’.

Bernardo was a rapist long before he met Homolka. The first recorded attack dates back to May 1987, when Bernardo was 23 years old.

There, the rapist began to define his ‘modus operandi’ that would later allow the police to understand that all the attacks came from the same aggressor. It was regarding taking advantage of the fact that he saw himself as an attractive man for the time to approach women who were alone on the streets of Scarborough, a neighborhood in Toronto, Canada.

He then proceeded to corner them, rape them, beat them and insult them. In the same week of the first attack, two more occurred with the same pattern, which in three years would result in more than 19 women being raped.

Police found a pattern in the way all the women were attacked and called the assailant “the Scarborough Rapist.”

In addition, they tried to create a drawing of the attacker from the stories of the victims, but the result was the face of an ordinary white man, “the boy next door” some local media called it. Nothing particularly distinguished him from a young man of that age.

Some interviews were carried out with possible suspects in which Bernardo was even questioned twice without any clues being obtained as to who the aggressor might be. Because of this, Bernardo, a rapist who until then had not become a murderer, was completely free.

‘Barbie and Ken’ murderers

Karla Homolka was the eldest of three sisters. In 1987, she met Bernardo, who was 23 at the time and she was 17, in a restaurant. Apparently, from what Homolka told the police much later, the connection was immediate and their love affair began quickly.

In his statements, Homolka admitted that during all the time she was Bernardo’s girlfriend, she knew that he never stopped raping other women.

Apparently, the woman did not find a major problem in this, although some time later, according to the book written regarding them, ‘Invisible Darkness’ by Stephen Williams, Homolka felt humiliated by what her partner did.

The link between the two aggressors was such that Bernardo even asked Homolka to marry him, but apparently following three years of courtship and commitment, the man began to get bored of her. and reproached him several times, as the woman declared at the time, for not having been a virgin when she met him.

It was precisely this claim that led to his first murder.

Tammy Homolka, Karla’s younger sister

In the summer of 1990, Bernardo began harassing Karla’s younger sister, who was 15 years old at the time.

The level of depravity was such that, apparently, Bernardo looked at the minor while she slept and masturbated. When he mentioned this to his then-fiancée, Homolka apparently decided that, as a present for the coming Christmas, he would give her sister’s virginity..

So, on the night of December 23, 1990, Homolka offered his younger sister, Tammy, a drink containing rum and anesthetics to put animals to sleep that she had obtained from the veterinary clinic where she worked.

The drink caused Tammy to fall practically doped on her bed, which was what the couple of aggressors were looking for so that Bernardo might rape the minor. In addition, her sister put a handkerchief with another anesthetic on her nose and mouth.

Thus, while her older sister watched the event, Bernardo abused the minor and recorded himself while doing it without realizing that Tammy, intoxicated, was drowning in her own vomit.

Before notifying their parents or the authorities, the criminals decided to clean the scene and dress the minor once more.

When she was taken to the hospital it was already too late and, despite the fact that she had burns on her face caused by the chemical in the handkerchief, they marked her death as “accidental” following, allegedly, having ingested too much alcohol and drowned in her own vomit.

The rapes and murders continue

Just under a year following the death of Homolka’s younger sister, the couple returned to commit another crime of murder and rape.

The victim was a 14-year-old girl. Leslie Mahaffy, who was kidnapped by Bernardo and taken to the house, which she shared with her partner in crime.

There they sexually abused her while recording the attack, they murdered her and so that her body would not be found easily, they cut it into pieces and threw it into a lake.

Although the remains of the minor were found days later, while the couple made their union official and married, neither Paul Bernardo nor Karla Homolka were related to her murder.

His next victim was Kristen French, less than a year following her most recent murder.. The youngest was 15 years old when she, like Leslie, was brutally abused and murdered by the couple.

Karla’s confession

Apparently, Homolka left Bernardo in 1993 and sought refuge in the house of one of her friends where, some time later, she was questioned by the police, as there were suspicions that her husband was the ‘Scarborough rapist’.

Months later and with a DNA test, the suspicion was confirmed and, in the absence of evidence to associate him with the three murders of minors, the police accepted a deal made by Karla Homolka to lower her sentence if she spoke regarding what Bernardo had done.

The media at the time began to call the couple the ‘Killer Barbie and Ken’ due to their physical beauty and their apparent similarity to the two toys.

Karla Homolka, do you know regarding victimaria?

At first, in the very detailed statements that the woman gave, her role in the relationship was that of one more victim of Bernardo. However, when the videos that the couple kept of their crimes were found, the woman did not seem to comply with what she had previously described.

Between both criminals there were accusations. While Homokan said that everything he had done was because he had a head full of Bernardo’s lies and lived under his influence, the man also stated that one of the murders was done because Homokan asked him to.

Al final, Karla Homokan was sentenced to 12 years in prison, which she served in 2005.. After leaving him, he gave his only interview to ‘Radio Canada’, in which he said that, despite having finished his sentence, he will never forgive himself for the things he did.

Paul Bernardo was sentenced to life in prison for the murder and rape of three minors and more than a dozen rapes of other victims since the 1980s.
