Barbara Walters, legendary American journalist and newscaster, has died

She died this Friday at the age of 93 “surrounded by her loved ones at home,” according to the official statement. She has won 12 Emmys in her 50-year career.

Legendary American news anchor Barbara Waltersa pioneer of women’s journalism, died this Friday at the age of 93 at her residence in New York.

“Barbara Walters passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at home. She lived her life with no regrets. She was a trailblazer not just for women journalists but for all women,” according to the official statement that her spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, shared with CNN.

He was born on September 25, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts, in the midst of the Great Depression. In 1976, she started working at ABC News and became the first female anchor of one of the great newscasts in the United States in prime time. In times where male faces dominated television, she emerged as the leading female voice.

Three years later she was co-host of another historical cycle: 20/20. In 1997, he launched with Bill Geddie the program The View, a talk show in which a group of women discussed current issues.

In her last appearance in 2014, she expressed: “How proud I feel today when I see all the young women who are making and reporting the news today. If I did anything to help make that happen, that will be my legacy“.

Also interviewed every US president and first lady between 1974 and 2016from Richard and Pat Nixon to Barack and Michelle Obama.

His unforgettable legacy in the journalism industry is reflected in the large number of awards he has received throughout his career as a professional. Without going any further, she was nominated 22 times in the Premios Emmy and on 12 of those occasions he won the award.

On June 14, 2007, they honored her with a star on the renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame. The following year, he was awarded a Disney Legends Award for his contributions to the company.

Not only was she the highest-paid broadcast journalist in the industry, with a $12 million annual contract at ABC News, but she also set the record for viewers in an interview conducted by a journalist from the United States.

Specifically, more than 74 million people watched his one-on-one with Monica Lewinsky live in 1999, in the midst of the scandal with then-President Bill Clinton.

“Barbara was a true legend, a pioneer not only for women in journalism but for journalism itself. She was a unique reporter in her field who landed many of the most important interviews of our time,” said Bob Iger, president of The Walt Disney Company, the company that owns ABC News.
