Barakah UAE 2023: National Emergency Response Exercise Demonstrates Readiness and Commitment to Nuclear Energy Safety

Abu Dhabi, October 13 / WAM / The activities of the “Barakah UAE 2023 exercise” were concluded, which lasted 36 continuous hours at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and its external surroundings.

The exercise confirmed the readiness and efficiency of the national emergency response system in the field of nuclear energy, and strengthened the international community’s confidence in the country’s nuclear energy infrastructure and its commitment to the highest standards related to safety, security and transparency.

His Highness Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, chaired the meeting of the national team related to accidents at hazardous sites and materials: chemical, radiological and nuclear hazardous materials accidents, where His Highness stressed that the UAE, with the wisdom and vision of the wise leadership, possesses an integrated and compatible joint system, and capable cadres. It is qualified and efficient to respond to emergencies in accordance with policies and plans that apply the highest international standards. His Highness called on the team to continue the path of excellence by raising the levels of national coordination and cooperation, and enhancing basic capabilities and resources in a sustainable manner to ensure an integrated quality of life with the highest standards of public safety, and to maintain the UAE’s advanced position and good international reputation. Especially with regard to security, safety, integrity and transparency.

National competencies from 21 federal agencies and 19 local agencies participated in the exercise, all of which demonstrated exceptional capabilities in managing crises and emergencies, and quickly dealing with potential risks, which reflects the level of expertise, high quality of qualification, and specialized training possessed by members of the national system for responding to crises and emergencies.

The “Emirates Barakah 2023 exercise” was carried out under the supervision of the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, and organized by Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with a group of strategic partners that included: the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Health and Community Protection, the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority, and the National Authority for the Management of… Emergencies, Crises and Disasters, the Abu Dhabi Police General Command, the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Authority, the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Center, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the Nawah Energy Company, and ADNOC.

As part of the preparations that preceded the implementation of the “Emirates Barakah 2023 exercise,” the National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority carried out a tabletop exercise, an exercise for operations centers and emergency management teams, in addition to coordination meetings to discuss the role of strategic partners. In addition, Abu Dhabi Police held a virtual simulation exercise to assess the readiness of the National Response System teams.

The “Emirates Barakah” exercise is designed to be held once every two years. As it is a basic requirement of the Nuclear Facilities Emergency Preparedness and Response Regulations “FANR-REG-12” issued by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, which requires that the operator have an integrated system to deal with nuclear or radiological emergencies in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
