“Vice President Biden”: Barack Obama returns to the White House and remembers the “good old days” The former president Barack Obama He returned to the White House on Tuesday for the first time since he left there, in January 2017, after handing over power to Donald Trump, and was received with a standing ovation.

Obama appeared at the White House to remember the 12th anniversary of the entry into force of his signature program, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare, a subsidized health care plan that expanded access to medical services to millions of people in a country where many do not have the financial conditions to visit the doctor and dentist and are at risk of going bankrupt due to the costs of emergency operations.

Known for his sense of humor, Obama began his message with a joke: “Vice President Biden”, which sparked laughter from the attendees, from Biden himself and from the current vice president, Kamala Harris. “It was a joke,” said Obama, who then hugged Biden and insisted. “Everything was arranged. My president, Joe Biden”.

Obama and Obamacare

Obama said that “for all of us, for Joe, for [el senador] Harry [Reid]para Nancy Pelosi [presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes]For others, the ACA was an example of why you run for office in the first place… We’re not supposed to do this just to hold office, or hold on to power. We’re supposed to do this because it’s making a difference in the lives of the people who put us in this place.”

The former president said that Obamacare “guaranteed the principle of universal health care, provided immediate help to families, but required us to continuously build on it and improve it.”

In his turn, Biden introduced himself as “Obama’s vice president”, following his predecessor’s joke, and stated that with his presence, “it feels like the good old days”.

After finishing his speech, Obama stood next to Harris, in what was a historic moment: the first black vice president in the history of United Statestogether with the first black vice president, of Asian origin, that the country has had.

The act served, in turn, to fix an element of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, known as the “family ruling” that left family members of those with access to affordable employer-provided health plans without the right to certain subsidies.

“The reason we are here today is because President Biden, Vice President Harris, everyone who has worked on this, knew from the beginning that the ACA was not perfect. To get the bill passed, we had to make compromises, we didn’t get everything we wanted,” Obama said.
