Banning Educational Violence: The Movement to Prohibit Spanking and Slapping Worldwide

65 countries have already banned this type of so-called “ordinary educational” violence… but not yet Belgium. The first to do so was Sweden.

Sweden, in 1979, instigated an unprecedented law: it was the very first country in the world to have legislated on educational violence by purely and simply prohibiting the latter.

That is to say, by prohibiting ordinary educational violence including at home, not just at school for example. Since then, other countries have followed, 65 in all. The most recent are Zambia and Mauritius. They adapted their legislation last year.

At the level of the European continent, there is a consensus on the issue. Today, almost all European countries ban spanking. The last to have done so was France, in 2019: the fact remains that certain countries are lagging behind on this issue, and this is what the associations are denouncing.

Belgium, Italy, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have not yet clearly prohibited ordinary educational violence, even mild ones, particularly at home.
