Leading

Recall that this time the hosts returned to the ceremony following 4 years of absence, and this time there were three of them at once. Actresses and comics Regina Holl, Wanda Sykes And Amy Sumer united all the performances and awards with their appearances into a single show. But is it so successful?

They started the show with a predictable joke: “Three women were hired for the ceremony because it’s still cheaper than hiring one man,” and continued with cosplays of characters from popular films. At these moments, the show turned into a strange comedy, which, although it discharged the glossiness (and in some places the drama), but resembled some kind of skit.

But there were some great jokes: from confused Timothy Chalamet And J.K. Simmons to exits to the hall to shake up the awaiting awards nominees. So it’s not so easy to conclude whether leaders are needed or not without them. At all the Oscar ceremonies, bad jokes are interspersed with funny ones, and the point here is in the script as a whole, the courage and sense of taste of the director of each particular show, and not in the choice of an individual comedian.

Main drama

Yes, bad jokes happen at the Oscars often, but infrequently their authors get hit in the jaw. That’s what happened with Chris Rockwho joked regarding short hair Jade Pinkett Smiththen Will Smith went up on stage and punched the comedian in the face. And then, returning to his place, he continued to answer Rock with his voice. Tom had no choice but to end his monologue, noting that apparently, this will be the greatest night in the history of American television. The audience might only laugh awkwardly.

A little later, Smith once once more went up on stage – for the award for the best performer of the main male role. In his acceptance speech, he apologized to the Academy, said that the most important thing in life is to protect his family, as his character did in the film. “King Richard”. And also cried.

In the comments and social networks, viewers continue to argue that it even happened. Maybe a trick to boost broadcast ratings? The latter is doubtful, of course. The film academy goes to great lengths to get its shows watched, but it certainly wouldn’t resort to breaking the law and tabloid. Later, all the media noted that Smith’s wife did not choose such a hairstyle herself, but suffers from alopecia (an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss).

The main touching moment

The winner in the Best Supporting Actor nomination was announced by last year’s laureate Yoon Yo-john, everyone’s favorite grandmother from Minari. Troy Kotzur from the indie melodrama CODA: Child of Deaf Parents became the first hearing-impaired person in the history of the award to win an acting Oscar. Yoon presented him with an award by showing her name in sign language, and then carefully picked up the figurine so that he might give his acceptance speech. The whole hall applauded him also in sign language.

Although it was not the only golden statuette of the film CODA: Child of Deaf Parents, and, moreover, one of the most predictable awards of the entire ceremony, Troy Kotsur’s performance will be remembered by viewers and critics for a long time.

Top fan film

Remember that this year moviegoers voted their favorite movie on Twitter? They became the “Army of the Dead” Zack Snyderfilmed for Netflix. Still, Snyder boasts the most devoted army of fans, at least among active Internet users.

The audience also chose the most favorite moment of the film in the history of cinema. It became, suddenly, the accelerating Flash from “Justice League” the same Zack Snyder. Recall that the director’s fans tried to promote “Snyderkat” in the previous category, but to no avail: the original film was released in 2017.

What regarding politics?

Contrary to expectations, the ceremony was rather apolitical. But the organizers, of course, might not completely bypass the main world drama of today.

Mila Kunis announced a minute of silence for those who died in Ukraine, and the Film Academy expressed the support of the entire Oscar community to those who are going through dark times. Support badges were seen on the clothes of the guests every now and then: they were put on Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo del Toro, Jamie Lee Curtis, Yoon Yo-john And Jason Momoa.

But in general, both speeches and jokes were rather toothless. Only internal American laws that discredit different groups of the population got it. So, the presenters walked through a bill from the state of Florida, which prohibits discussing sexual orientation in schools (the governor of Florida supported the project, while the US president opposed it).

Various oddities

Every year, at the end of the ceremony, viewers are shown an In Memoriam video, in which filmmakers who have died over the past year are mentioned. Usually, during this video, a sentimental song is performed, giving the opportunity to say goodbye to the departed. This year the video was shown under an upbeat number with a choir and dancing. Although gospel as a genre fits the theme, but this performance pushed the attention away from those for whom everything was started. A slightly strange decision was the fact that the three heroes of the sad video were presented separately: with a story regarding what they were professionals and people. It was embarrassing for the others.

Many celebrities appeared in the broadcast of the ceremony literally for 30-40 seconds, apparently, just so that the organizers might put a tick that they worked out the entire audience of the show. So, for example, members of the K-pop group BTS appeared on the screens with a not too clear goal and said that they were very fond of Disney cartoons.

many anniversaries

All viewers were waiting for the Oscars to celebrate the 50th anniversary “Godfather”the great saga Francis Ford Coppola. Recently, the director was finally awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and it was not at all surprising when he himself appeared on the stage, and with him Al Pacino And Robert De Niro.

The winner in the category “Best Actor” (in which Will Smith won) was announced Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson And John Travolta. Their company celebrated the film’s 28th birthday “Crime novel” and specifically dance from it. It was not the most obvious choice: 28 years old is still not 50, but oh well. Who doesn’t want to remember Tarantino once once more?

The Academy also celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the film “White People Can’t Jump” by inviting the leading roles in it. Wesley Snipes And Woody Harrelson. So it became clear where Snipes, who was not on the wave of popularity, appeared on the list of participants in the ceremony. But why the organizers chose such a not-so-obvious film to celebrate remains unclear.

Well, at the end of the ceremony, they remembered another big anniversary – the musical “Cabaret” with Lisa Minelli starring. The tape came out in 1972. It was for this celebratory reason that Minelli announced the winner in the nomination “Best Film” in the company of another star of musicals. Lady Gaga.

Honoring films is a good thing, but many critics were surprised that these films received more broadcast screen time than many nominees.

Winners (and not)

A little regarding surprises in the most important thing – victories and defeats. This year’s record holder was Dune. Movie Denis Villeneuve received statuettes for the best soundtrack, sound, cinematography and production designer, editing and visual effects. But due to the innovation, almost all of the winners listed were named before the start of the broadcast.

The main film of the ceremony was “CODA: Child of Deaf Parents”, a sweet indie melodrama regarding a family of hard of hearing fishermen in which a talented singer grows up. The film directed by Shan Hader is a remake of the French comedy regarding a family of farmers, which, however, not only did not prevent the tape from becoming a triumph, but also helped earn another award – in the Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a biopic regarding televangelists with Jessica Chastain in the title role, like “CODA”, took all the “Oscars” for which it was nominated: best actress and best make-up and hair.

Award season winner (the film was nominated for 11 Oscars), Power of the Dog Jane Campionin the end received only one statuette – for the best director.

Belfast Kenneth Bran beat “Licorice Pizza” Paul Thomas Anderson in the Best Original Screenplay category. Without an Oscar, Diane Warren, a 13-time nominee in the Best Song category, was also left. The composer does not despair, but continues to cheerfully joke regarding her total bad luck. This time, for example, she took a piece of paper in her purse, which indicates that it was she who won the nomination. And what remains if the organizers did not stock up on this!

Main dresses, suits and (missing) shirts

No ceremony is complete without disrupting or creating fashion trends. This year, for example, young actors have shaken up the usual approach to how to look at the world’s premier film ceremony. Fashion critics are looking in the archives to see if anyone has appeared at the Oscars in all these 94 years without a shirt, and no, Timothy ChalametApparently, there really is one.

Kristen Stewart, Zendaya And Uma Thurman showed a trend to rethink office fashion, and Stewart also abandoned the classic long dresses and trains.

Black became the main color of women’s dresses. In 2018, nominees chose black for the Golden Globes to show their support for the movement. #metoo. On March 27 of this year, the choice of black was for many a continuation of the struggle for women’s rights, for some it was mourning for those who died in Ukraine, but for some it was a matter of taste. Billy Eilish, for example, was remembered for her black Gucci dress: it went well with her black hair color, but somewhat contrasted with the song No Time To Die, for which the singer received an Oscar.

Like every year, someone at the Oscars uses clothes as a big statement. This year, it has acquired a special sound: the laureate for the best costumes in the film decided to speak in the language of dresses “Cruella” Jenny Bevan. She came to the ceremony in an unfinished tuxedo, protesting the unfair pay of her colleagues in Hollywood.
