Banned in Belgium: Hot Chip Challenge Sparks Safety Concerns

The Hot Chip Challenge, made famous by influencers, mainly on TikTok, will no longer be available for sale in Belgium, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca) decided on Friday following an opinion of the Plant Preparations Commission. This extremely spicy chip can cause eye, skin and respiratory problems.

According to the Advisory Committee on Plant Preparations (a scientific advisory body of the FPS Public Health), a product containing a concentrated dose of capsaicinoids (chili peppers) has no place on the food market.

“The peppers contained in the crisp are not prohibited per se,” explains Liesbeth Van de Voorde, from Afsca. “The problem is that it is intended for isolated use.” The agency therefore asks people who have purchased this #HotChipChallenge brand product not to consume it and to return it to the point of sale.

The Hot Chip Challenge was sold in various points of sale in Belgium, including Delhaize, Intermarché, Carrefour and Spar. The product was also available online. Anyone wishing to obtain additional information can contact Afsca on 0800/13.550 or at the email address pointdecontact@afsca.be.
