A mysterious mural appeared in London recently. At first, no one was sure who the artist was. They might only guess that it was the street graffiti master Banksy based on his painting style. It wasn’t until Monday (18th UK time) that Banksy posted three photos on his Instagram account that it was confirmed that the new mural was his masterpiece. The new work attracted a large number of people to watch it, and some residents felt that the work conveyed a message of the struggle of nature.
The mural is located on the exterior wall of a residential building in Finsbury Park, North London. In front of the wall is a bare tree regarding two stories high. Banksy painted green paint on the second floor of the wall. From a distance, it just looks like the green leaves of the bare tree. There is also a portrait of a tall woman at the bottom of the mural, holding a high-pressure gun and seemingly spray-painting the exterior wall.
Neighbors: New work brings neighbors together
A large number of people came to watch,“Guardian” Neighbor Lidia Guerra was quoted as saying that the downward flow of the paint reminded her of a weeping willow and the bare tree. She felt that the work was conveying a message, which was the struggle of nature. Another neighbor, Carolyn, said that the new work brings people together and connects the community, which is a good scenery.

The bare tree connected to the mural is believed to be a cherry that is forty or fifty years old. Its health is declining, and the city council’s tree maintenance team has been working hard to prolong its life. James Peak, producer of BBC Radio 4’s program “The Banksy Story,” also came to view the mural and believed the message was clear: “Nature is struggling, and it’s up to us to recover.”
“It’s spring right now, and this tree should be in full bloom. Banksy must have cycled here and thought how desolate the trees looked,” Peak said.
The residential building to which the facade belongs is currently vacant, and Alex Gergiou, whose company owns the property, thinks the whole thing is “crazy.” The district itself has a graffiti removal team and it is believed that they will not remove this masterpiece. However, not every Banksy painting is protected. In December last year, he painted a military drone graffiti on a “Stop” road sign in South London. It was removed with snakeheads within an hour, and two men were subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft and criminal damage.
