Bangladesh.. Sheikh Hasina announces her resignation and leaves Dhaka by helicopter

In a speech on state television, Waqar al-Zaman called on citizens to trust the army and stop the violence, stressing that talks were underway to form an interim transitional government.

The army commander promised to restore peace to the country and conduct an investigation into all the killings that occurred over the past weeks, indicating that there is no longer a need to impose a curfew or any emergency measures in the country.

“Representatives of the main political parties were present in the discussions with the army,” he said, adding: “Give us some time and we will find a solution. I call on the students to calm down and return to their homes.”

Student activists had called for a march to the capital Dhaka, in defiance of a nationwide curfew announced by the government on Sunday to pressure Hasina to resign, a day after deadly clashes across the country that killed 300 people.

The student protests in Bangladesh are due to the resumption of a quota system for admission to the civil service, which makes it difficult for a large number of university graduates to find a job.

Under the quota system, people from families of participants in the 1971 war for Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan, representatives of national and religious minorities, as well as areas with inadequate representation in the civil service and the disabled, have an advantage when entering government employment.
