After two weeks of violent protests, the government of Bangladesh has bowed to the main demand of the student movement. The Supreme Court has abolished the quota reserved for the descendants of so-called freedom fighters and backward classes in government jobs and has now allowed only 7 percent quota. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has accepted this decision of the Supreme Court which came three days ago.
Even after the government bowed down on a basic demand, the student movement does not seem to die down. The protesting students are demanding that the curfew should be lifted across the country, internet service should be restored and all educational institutions should be opened. Internet service has been partially restored.
More than 600 students and other people have been arrested during the student movement’s protests and raids. Nothing has come out regarding his release so far. The student movement, while presenting basic demands, has not even insisted on their release.
Political observers say that there are no signs of restoration of peace even after the government accepted the decision of the Supreme Court regarding the quota of government jobs.
