Bandung Commemorates World AIDS Day, Underscores Equal Rights for People Living with HIV/AIDS
Equal rights for people living with HIV/AIDS took center stage at Bandung’s commemoration of World AIDS Day 2024.
The event, themed “Equal Rights for All, Together We Can,” unfolded at the Bandung Creative Hub on Monday, December 9th, where Assistant for Government and Social Welfare Asep Saeful Gufron, who chairs the Bandung City Aids Management Commission variety stood steadfast against the lingering stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS, particularly within the city itself. He reminded everyone of the urgent need to eradicate these harmful prejudices from communities.
Cultivating Inclusion and Supporting Those Affected
“It is paramount that we approach people living with HIV/AIDS with empathy and inclusivity, ensuring they are not marginalized and feel supported. We encourage those who haven’t yet sought treatment to come forward. PLHIV must be embraced, and there must be absolutely no discrimination.
We implore sub-districts to identify and educate individuals within their communities so that those living with HIV/AIDS are comfortable accessing treatment,” stated Asep.
Combating HIV/AIDS: Data and Targets
Since 1991, Bandung has recorded 12,170 HIV/AIDS cases, though many cases originate from beyond city limits. Despite this, the city continues to provide healthcare access to all those who need it without discrimination.
Momon Ahmad Imron Sutisna, Head of the Bandung City Welfare Department, stressed the commitment of both the government and stakeholders to the “Three Zeros” target by 2030—no new HIV infections, no AIDS-related deaths, and the complete elimination of stigma towards PLHIV.
A Multi-faceted Approach to Awareness
2024’s World AIDS Day in Bandung saw a variety of educational and collaborative events. These included trining for youth cadres in 30 junior high schools and 30 Madrasah TsanawiyahHolder (MTs), HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns organized by universities and health institutions. Additionally, a hybrid international seminar was hosted by RSHS and STI information was shared at Kiara Artha Park.
Throughout Bandung, 30 sub-districts and 151 sub-districts proudly displayed HAS banners, further amplifying awareness.
The commemorative event culminated in a viewing of the movie “Stigma,” produced by the NGO Red Ribbon.
Recognizing Outstanding Service
Six outstanding Community Organizers were recognized for their invaluable contributions. Those recognized included Eti Wulandari (Sukjadi District), Muhammad Alif Ridwan (Bojongloa Kaler District), Enceng Imron (Cinambo District), Arif Nurdiansyah (Cibeunying Kaler District), Firman Afandi (Cibiru District), and Dewi Ardhi (Coblong District.
How does the Bandung City government plan to measure the effectiveness of their HIV/AIDS education programs in dispelling myths and promoting understanding within the community?
