Bandai Namco Plans A Gundam Metaverse Consisting Of Virtual Space Colonies

In context: The world is still divided on the concept of a “metaverse”. Some say it’s the next frontier for the internet, while others don’t see the point, arguing that we already have access to everything the metaverse might provide. Yet these ongoing discussions haven’t stopped Facebook and, now, Bandai Namco from carving out a place for themselves in this futuristic digital world. The latter has already laid out plans for a “Metaverse project” focused on Gundam.

In case you didn’t grow up playing with Gundam toys as a kid, here’s a quick summary: Gundam is a Japanese media franchise that focuses on giant mechanical robots (controlled by ordinary pilots) who battle and/or save the world. Although no longer a completely unique franchise, Gundam toys, movies, games, and shows remain popular with kids and adults of all ages.

Apparently, the popularity of the franchise is so great that it warrants the creation of an entire metaverse (or sub-metaverse, perhaps?), and Bandai Namco is keen to see that happen. In fact, the company eventually wants a metaverse for each of its IP addresses; Gundam is just the beginning.

The Gundam metaverse will consist of at least four distinct virtual communities, collectively known as “Side-G”. Each community will target a different facet of Gundam fandom: games, music, anime, and “Gunpla,” which refers to the company’s line of plastic model kits.

Each community will have the style of a “space colony”, tied to a single space hub. Virtual settlements will offer a variety of activities for users: custom rooms, social hubs, and even the ability to scan real Gunpla models for use in virtual battle arenas.

Naturally, Bandai Namco plans to monetize all of this. This will ensure that there are plenty of virtual stores for Metaverse users to purchase digital goods and services “as part of their daily lives.”

You’d be forgiven for thinking this all sounds a bit ambitious given the current state of the VR industry, but we guess it makes sense for Bandai Namco to plan ahead. Whether the world likes it or not, the “metaverse” is probably happening – there’s too much money invested in the concept for the tech giants to abandon it now.

That said, we have no idea what form the Metaverse (or Metaverses) will take. Will it be a fun virtual environment to hang out with friends and family, or just a desert riddled with ads that few people use? Only time will tell.
