Ban request on ‘The Kerala Story’, Indian court denied

Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday the film has refused to hear a plea seeking a ban on the release of ‘The Kerala Story’. The petitioner contended that it was ‘hate speech of the worst kind’ and ‘audio-visual propaganda’.

A bench comprising Justice KM Joseph and Justice BV Nagaratna was told by senior counsel Kapil Sibal and advocate Nizam Pasha that the trailer of the film released on Friday (May 5) has been viewed 16 million times.

Pasha said that this film is the worst kind of hate speech. This is purely audio-visual propaganda.’

“There are many types of hate speech,” the bench said. The film has received the certificate and has been cleared by the board. It’s not like a person walks up to the podium and starts giving an uncontrollable speech. If you want to challenge the release of the film, you should challenge through the certification and appropriate forum.’

After that, Sibal said that he will do whatever is necessary.

Justice Nagaratna said that the petitioner should approach the High Court first. “There is no time left because the film is going to release on Friday,” Pasha replied.

‘This is not a valid reason,’ the bench inquired. Otherwise, everyone will start coming to the Supreme Court.’

Justice Joseph said that although he was not advising the petitioner, there was a need to file a substantive writ petition to find an appropriate remedy.

This new Hindi movie is based on the theme of conversion.

As soon as the film’s teaser was released, the ruling CPI-M-led Left and UDF demanded that the film should not be screened. Kerala’s Culture Minister Saji Cherian said, “If ‘The Kerala Story’ is shown, people should boycott it.”

He also said that legal action will be taken against this film.

This movie is directed by Sudipto Sen. It revolves around the lives of four college students in Kerala who become part of ISIS.

The film also stars Yogeeta Bahani, Siddhi Adnani and Sonia Balani. It is produced by Vipul Amrit Lal Shah.
