Nearly seven out of ten Walloon municipalities (69%) ban fireworks for New Year festivities, Gaia calculated. The animal rights association is calling for such a ban because the firing of pyrotechnic devices causes significant stress for animals.
Walloon Brabant stands out as the champion of the ban since all its municipalities exclude fireworks for the end-of-year celebrations (unless written authorization from the mayor), according to data collected by Gaia. Hainaut follows closely with 90% of local authorities having banned this type of celebration. The province of Namur closes the top 3 with 71% of municipalities banning fireworks. In Liège, six out of ten municipalities are moving in this direction, compared to only 32% in the province of Luxembourg.
To achieve these results, Gaia examined the general police regulations of each Walloon police zone, as well as the websites of the 262 municipalities in the south of the country. Indeed, a mayor can decide to prohibit fireworks if this measure is absent from the RGP, which concerns several municipalities at the same time.
“29% still allow“the firing of pyrotechnic devices, notes Gaia, which includes in this category bans limited to public roads as well as those with an exception for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In addition, 2% of Walloon municipalities “do not have clear information on their website, or make any reference to fireworks in their RGP“, specifies the organization. Gaia requests a ban”farm“for individuals and exclusive use of fireworks with low noise by professionals in municipalities who wish”absolutely maintain this tradition“.
