The cargo ship’s owner and management company filed a court application seeking to limit their legal liability for the disaster.

Grace Ocean Private Ltd. based in Singapore owns the Dali, the ship that lost power before crashing into the bridge last week. Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., also based in Singapore, is the vessel’s operator.

The metal bridge collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday, killing six workers, when a huge container ship slammed into one of the support piers.

The companies filed a “limitation of liability” motion Monday in federal court denying any fault or negligence and seeking to limit their liability to regarding $43.6 million — which they claim is the ship’s total value following losses and damages .

“The accident was not due to any fault, negligence or lack of care on the part of the petitioners, the vessel or any person or entity for whose acts the petitioners may be responsible,” the filing states.

“If the court finds the shipowner and/or Synergy liable, such liability shall be limited to the value of the vessel and its outstanding fares in respect of the voyage,” the filing states.

Companies ask for limitation of liability

According to a Daily Mail report, the companies said that before the fatal voyage, the value of the ship was no more than $90 million. They estimated repair costs to be at least $28 million, salvage costs to be at least $19.5 million, and freight costs estimated to be $1.17 million.

The groups filed suit under a pre-Civil War provision, an 1851 maritime law, that allows them to seek to limit their liability to only the value of the ship’s wreck following an accident. A federal court in Maryland will ultimately decide who is responsible for the accident and how much they owe.

White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said the US president will travel to Baltimore the manufacture.

“As Biden said hours following the collapse, this administration will stand with the people of Baltimore every step of the way,” Jean-Pierre said. Biden is expected to meet with state and local leaders — including Maryland Gov. Wes Moore — as he tours the crash site

He added that the administration is working with Congress to ensure that the federal government pays for the bridge’s reconstruction.

Baltimore officials also announced they would build two temporary alternate channels for commercial vessels following last week’s collapse.

Crews have begun the complex task of removing steel and concrete at the site of a deadly bridge collapse on the Patapsco River following a freighter collision that killed six construction workers. Twenty-two sailors remain confined to Dali since last Tuesday’s disaster as they answer questions from investigators regarding the disaster.

The reopening of the port of Baltimore is critical

On Sunday, teams of divers examined sections of the bridge and inspected the ship, while workers on lifts used flashlights to cut above water sections of the twisting steel superstructure.

“This will mark an important first step on the road to reopening the Port of Baltimore,” Capt. David O’Connell, the federal on-site response coordinator, said in a statement Sunday night.

The bridge fell when the crew of the freighter Dali lost control on March 26. They sent out a distress signal, which gave police enough time to stop vehicles from entering the bridge, but not enough time to remove a crew of eight workers from the bridge. Eight construction workers were filling potholes on the bridge when the accident occurred. Two were rescued immediately following the collapse. Divers recovered the bodies of two others and the remaining four are presumed dead.

According to iefimerida, the workers came to the Maryland area from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, according to diplomats from those countries.

Congress is expected to consider aid packages to help people who lose their jobs or businesses due to the extended closure of the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and farm equipment than any other facility in the U.S. President Joe Biden said he expects the federal government to cover the entire cost of rebuilding. His administration approved $60 million in emergency federal aid for debris removal and other initial costs.
