Balochistan to Paris: An Amateur Photographer’s Captivating Visual Odyssey

Highlighting the natural beauty and cultural colors of Balochistan in his photographs, photographer Rahim Bakhsh Khetran wants to convey the message of peace through his masterpieces.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, he said: ‘I want to change people’s perception of Balochistan by showing all its beauty, including people, mountains and culture in my pictures.’

Rahim Bakhsh Khetran from Barkhan district of Balochistan is an amateur photographer and the first world exhibition of his photographs was held at Galaxy Art Paris in the capital of France.

Two of his photographs of Rahim Bakhsh, one of a portrait and one of a rickshaw on the Gwadar beach, were placed in the exhibition, while 30 other photographs graced the Galaxy Art website.

Rahim Bakhsh said: ‘I never thought about exhibiting my pictures. Often I used to upload pictures on social media.’

He said a friend sent some of the photos to Galaxy Art, which organized an exhibition to welcome artists from different regions.

‘They liked my pictures because they were closer to nature.’

He further said that in Balochistan there are mountains, deserts, and people with different characteristics in each region, while the beauty of the desert can be seen apart from the coast of Gwadar.

Rahim Bakhsh has been traveling to different parts of Balochistan for his work, and being fond of photography, he has captured many scenes and faces on camera.

Rahim Bakhsh studied Anthropology from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, while pursuing a PhD in Human Geography from Turkey.

Photographs on display

The Galaxy Art Paris exhibition featured two paintings by Rahim Bakhsh, one of which depicts an elderly man in portrait form.

Rahim Bakhsh said of the photo: ‘This old man cooks in a langar at the shrine of the great Balochi-language poet Mast Tawakli in Kohlu district of Balochistan, and it really moved me.’

He said that he named the portrait of the old man as ‘The life I have lived has become my strength’.

The second image, titled ‘Kisi ki complete wealth’ shows a rickshaw parked on the beach in Gwadar.

‘After a long day of work, the rickshaw driver got tired and went to the beach and parked his rickshaw, which was very nice and I captured it on my camera.’

Referring to the selection of photographs for the exhibition, Rahim Bakhsh said that the art gallery owners carefully reviewed his masterpieces, and corrected several things in them.

He also asked me about the purpose and thought of making each picture. It is also a difficult process to select a few of the many images for exhibition.’

He claimed that an art gallery in Paris had declared his photos as artistic photography.

Pakistani photographer

According to Rahim Bakhsh, it is difficult, but not impossible, to exhibit the work of Pakistani photographers or artists at the world level.

He said that in order to get a place in international exhibitions, photographers have to follow people who are doing good work on social media in addition to contacting people in the outside world.

‘If we send our stuff to the outside world, their thinking about us will change, but for that it is important to know which of our art can influence someone abroad.’
