Balochistan: Thalassemia Center of Ketch where 400 children are treated

Irshad Arif told Independent Urdu that at present they have about 400 children of 10 to 15 years enrolled under Thalassemia Major who are being transfused every 15 to 20 days.

He said that ‘children from Panjgur district and Gwadar are also admitted in the center, including the remote suburbs of Turbat.’

He said that parents of sick children ask for blood from students in educational institutions to get blood donations. They also have to do the vows of their relatives.’

Established in 2019, this thalassemia center also has campuses at various locations to receive blood donations.

A 15-year-old girl suffering from thalassemia from Turbat, Zhan Zahoor Gorgej, said that she had to go to Karachi every week because there was no thalassemia center in her area.

“Now that the Catch Thalassemia Care Center, Turbat has been established, other thalassemia patients in the province, including me, are benefiting from it.”

Dr Misbah Munir told Independent Urdu that there are two types of thalassemia. Thalassemia Minor and Thalassemia Major.’

He explained that “In thalassemia minor, children suffer from anemia, but they do not have to receive blood from outside, while major is a dangerous type that requires the patient to receive blood from outside for life.”

“Symptoms of thalassemia major begin to appear at six months, including loss of appetite, weight gain, significant loss of height and pale complexion,” he said.

He further said that ‘to cure this disease, relevant tests should be done before marriage and marriages between cousins ​​should not be encouraged.’
