Balochi chador made in different colors breaks the cold

As soon as winter comes, buyers of Balochi shawls or Balochi Ajrak start increasing in the markets of Quetta. These shawls are mostly found in Quetta by the people of Balochistan.

Zaheer Khan is also present in Quetta’s Liaquat Bazaar to buy Balochi shawls.

He says: ‘I have come to buy this chador from Kohlu Barkhan, because it is cold season and we use this thing more in winter. This is ours. Balochi Culture That’s why we prefer this cloak or shawl.’

Shawl is a Balochi language word meaning ‘sheet’ while in Pashto the word ‘sheet’ is called ‘pattu’ or ‘tikrai’, which is used by the people here as a culture apart from the cold.

The cultural aspect is also highlighted by the hand embroidery on these sheets made of different colors.

Muhammad Bilal, a shopkeeper from Quetta, told Independent Urdu that this chador is also known as Thar Shawl due to its widespread use in Tharparkar. However, later in Balochistan it was given the name Balochi Shawl.

He adds that ‘this shawl is mostly used by the people here in winter, Balochi shawl is made of warm thread. It is also made from wool.’

According to him, these shawls made of velvet are more expensive and of good quality.

Muhammad Bilal said that this shawl is worn by women as well as men. So, as soon as the winter starts, we start getting customers.

“People from different parts of Balochistan visit here to buy them.”

He added that ‘the purchase of shawls gives them a good profit in the season.’

This chador or shawl is worn not only by Baloch in Balochistan but also by Pashtuns, Sindhis and now in other parts of the country.

Mohammad Khattab from Jhal Magsi district has also come to the market to buy shawls.

“Baluchi shawls are very popular with people and are the best thing to keep away from cold,” he said.

The shopkeeper Muhammad Imran says that ‘as the winter grows, the demand and need for this shawl increases and the markets are crowded with buyers.’
