Bali‘s Mental Health ‌Facility Gets ​a New Name: Manah Shanti Mahottama

In a bid‌ to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness, Bali’s central psychiatric hospital in bangli has⁤ undergone a significant rebranding. The facility, previously known as ‌Rumah sakit jiwa Provinsi Bali, is now called Rumah Sakit⁣ Jiwa⁤ Manah Shanti Mahottama (Manah Shanti ⁢Mahottama Mental hospital).

The renaming⁢ ceremony took ‌place on December 24, 2025, and was attended by Bali’s Interim Governor, S.M. Mahendra Jaya, and other government officials. Governor Mahendra Jaya emphasized the importance of eliminating negative perceptions surrounding mental health:

“Unfortunatly, a negative stigma ‍still attaches in ⁢society, including in the perception that the City of​ Bangli is synonymous with mental disorders. This hospital is here to⁢ serve all Balinese people ​without⁣ exception,” said Mahendra Jaya.

He added that the name change is a strategic step towards‍ creating more ⁢inclusive and professional mental health​ services.

The new name, Manah Shanti Mahottama, is deeply⁢ symbolic. “Manah” translates to “mind” or “soul,” while “Shanti” means “peace”⁢ and “tranquility,” and “Mahottama” signifies “of primary importance.”

Dr. Ni Wayan Murdani, Director of the renamed hospital, explained that ​the ​process involved a thorough review ⁤by ​a Focus​ Discussion Group comprising government authorities and community leaders.
