Sarah Menzel herself is a non-Muslim with Balinese blood. Meanwhile, Azriel Hermansyah is a Muslim. However, apparently, they both answered wisely questions from netizens who were curious regarding the couple’s confidence in getting married.
“In Bali, we as girls usually follow our husband’s (beliefs and place of residence),” explained Sarah Menzel, quoted from YouTube The Hermansyah, Wednesday 20 September 2023.
Sarah Menzel explained that tradition in Bali requires women to follow in their husband’s footsteps, both in terms of beliefs and where they live. Moreover, Sarah Menzel has an older brother which gives her the freedom to choose and follow her husband in the future.
“Sarah has an older brother, so she is the one at home. So, Kevin (the older brother) is not allowed to participate in (his wife’s religion and residence), because he is continuing the throne (family lineage),” explained Sarah Menzel.
Sarah Menzel does not deny converting to Islam if she marries Azriel Hermansyah because she has to follow whatever her husband chooses. He then explained the differences in his family tree with his mother having to stay at home and having to continue the family lineage.
“Because it’s Mama’s sister, the girl goes with her husband. So someone has to be at home. Sarah has Sarah’s older sister. So Sarah can go out (change religion with her husband),” he added.
Interestingly, Sarah Menzel admitted that her own parents had different beliefs. For this reason, her father and mother allow whatever religion Sarah Menzel believes in if she marries Azriel Hermansyah.

“Because mom and dad are also of a different religion. But dad is the one who (changed religion). Because (in the family) mom is both girls and mom is the first child. So, for example, if mom follows dad, there’s no one to follow at all,” added Sarah Menzel.
“This is not coercion, yes. He and his mother are fine with it (changing religions),” added Azriel Hermansyah.
Aurel Hermansyah’s younger brother assured that he had never thought regarding inviting Sarah Menzel to change religion to become a Muslim like himself. He also emphasized that there was no compulsion whatsoever regarding the religion that Sarah Menzel would later embrace if she were to marry him.
“It’s not coercion, I never force it. It’s just the confession (to propose and marry Sarah Menzel),” said Azriel Hermansyah.
